Causes of “Irregular Menstruation”
Various causes other than pregnancy, breastfeeding, and birth control pills that lead to “irregular menstruation” include:
- Anemia and Blood Deficiency – Weakens the uterus, insufficient menstrual blood to be expelled as regular menstruation
- Stress and Insufficient Rest – Results in qi stagnation, poor blood circulation, causing irregular menstruation
- Excessive Weight – Creates phlegm and dampness, obstructing the Chong meridian (冲脉) and Ren meridian (任脉), resulting in poor blood circulation, affecting hormone production that causes ovulation, leading to irregular menstruation
- Menopause / Approaching Menopause – Ages 45-55, vaginal dryness, declining hormone levels, causing irregular ovulation, internal heat generation, causing blood and body fluids to dry up, resulting in absent or sporadic menstruation
- Uterine Cysts / Ovarian Cysts – Blood stasis, qi stagnation, formation of stagnant masses, poor blood circulation, cyst formation, affecting ovulation, causing irregular menstruation
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – High male hormone levels and absence of ovulation, causing irregular menstruation
- Premature Ovarian Failure – Insufficient rest, inadequate nutrition, insufficient blood nourishment to the uterus, rapid reproductive system deterioration, causing irregular menstruation

Normally, women ovulate every month. When the egg is not fertilized or pregnancy doesn’t occur, the uterine lining breaks down, resulting in monthly menstruation.
If there’s an absence of menstruation, coming sometimes and not others, this indicates abnormalities in the internal reproductive system. When menstruation is irregular or abnormal, many women tend to ignore it and don’t take serious treatment. However, they don’t realize that frequent irregular menstruation may be a warning sign of various diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome or ovarian deterioration, including future fertility difficulties.
